QR codes for museum exhibits: an audio guide on every visitor's phone
To build a museum guide with QR codes, add one dynamic QR code to each exhibit label and point it at that object's audio, video or longer text. Visitors use their own phones, so there are no handsets to buy, charge or clean.
Because the QR codes are dynamic, curators can rewrite the content or move an object without replacing the label.
- Phone in FrenchFrench audio
- Phone in MandarinMandarin audio
- During a loanWhere it went
- Everyone elseEnglish audio
You provide each recording. The language rules send every phone to the right one.
A label only has room for 50 words
Exhibit labels have to stay short, so most of the story never reaches the visitor. Audio guide handsets solve that, but they cost money, need charging and rarely cover every language.
A QR code keeps the label short and gives anyone curious the full story.
Set it up in three steps
- 1
Prepare the content
Publish each object's audio or text on your website or a media host. A short page per object works best on a phone.
- 2
Make the QR codes in bulk
List each object and its link in a spreadsheet and upload up to 100 at a time, named by object or room.
- 3
Add them to the labels
Print a small QR code in the same spot on every label, so visitors quickly learn where to look.
Designing it into the label
On a label read from arm's length, around 2.5 cm wide is usually enough. In dim galleries, use a matte finish, since glare on a glossy label can stop a phone from reading it, and use strong contrast.
Galleries with weak signal should offer free Wi-Fi at the entrance, and say so on the first panel, because the content loads over the visitor's connection.
Adding a logo to a QR codeQuestions
Do visitors need to download an app?
No. The QR code opens in the phone's browser. Remind visitors to bring headphones if the content is audio.
Can we match the QR code to our exhibition design?
Yes. You can use your own colors, shapes and logo, and a live check confirms that the design still scans.
Can we see which exhibits get the most attention?
Yes. With one QR code per object, scan counts show which pieces people want to learn more about.
Print it once, and keep it working
If you cancel, your QR codes keep redirecting for 14 days. Keep-alive keeps up to 10 of them on for good. A lapsed code shows a clean paused page, never an ad, and if HueQR ever closes you get 12 months' notice and a full export.
