How to

Put your QR codes on your own domain

The short answer

A dynamic QR code opens a short link, and by default that link is on the generator's domain. Connect your own domain and the link becomes scan.yourbrand.com/xxxxx instead. People who glance at the link on their phone see your name, and if you ever leave the service, the domain is yours to point elsewhere. On HueQR a custom domain is included in Pro, takes one DNS record, and you can connect up to five.

Why it is worth doing

Three reasons, in order of how much they matter:

  • Trust. A phone shows the link before it opens. scan.yourcafe.com gets tapped. A stranger's domain gets a second look.
  • Control. If you stop using HueQR, you can point the domain anywhere. Your printed codes stay yours.
  • Brand. The link is part of the print. It should say your name.

Use a subdomain, not your main domain

Point scan.yourbrand.com or go.yourbrand.com at HueQR, not yourbrand.com itself. A subdomain needs one DNS record and leaves your website untouched. Your main domain is where your website lives and it should stay that way.

Connecting it, step by step

In Settings under Custom domains:

  • Type the subdomain and click Add domain.
  • HueQR shows the DNS record to add. For a subdomain it is a CNAME. For a root domain it is an A record.
  • Add the record wherever you manage DNS: your registrar or your website host.
  • Click Check again. DNS can take a few minutes to a few hours to spread. The domain shows Live when it is ready.
  • If the domain was used with another service before, HueQR may ask for one extra TXT record to prove it is yours.

Putting codes on it

When you create a code, pick the domain in the last step. Existing codes can be moved from the code page. Each code keeps its short slug; only the domain in front of it changes. Remember that a code's printed pattern contains the full link, so moving an already-printed code to a new domain means a reprint. Pick the domain before you print.

What happens if you remove the domain

Codes on it move back to hueqr.com automatically, so the dashboard keeps working. Anything already printed with the old domain in it stops working, because the domain no longer points at HueQR. Only remove a domain when nothing printed depends on it.
