Can you change a QR code after printing it?

The short answer

Yes, if the code is dynamic. A dynamic QR code points to a short link, and you change where that short link goes, so the printed squares never need to change. A static QR code cannot be changed after printing, because the destination is written into the pattern itself.

If you have not printed yet, the fix is to make the code dynamic before you do. If you already printed a static code, there is no way to edit it, but there are a few ways to limit the damage. Both are below.

Why most printed codes cannot be edited

A QR code is a picture of some text. When the text is https://yourshop.com/menu, the squares are that address and nothing else. A phone camera reads the squares and opens the address. There is no server in the middle that could swap it. If the menu moves to a new page, every printed copy points at the old one.

How a dynamic code gets around that

A dynamic code encodes a short link instead of your real address. On HueQR that is hueqr.com followed by a few letters, or your own domain if you connect one. When someone scans, the short link sends them on to whatever page you have set, right now. Change the page in the dashboard and the next scan goes to the new one. The print never changes.

You can also schedule a change for a date and time, so a holiday menu switches over at midnight without you remembering to do it.

Already printed a static code? Three options

None of these edit the code, but each one helps:

  • Keep the old address alive and redirect it. If the code points at yourshop.com/menu, set up a redirect on your own website from that address to the new page. The code keeps working.
  • Put a sticker over it. A new dynamic code the same size, on a plain label, is a cheap fix for a small run of flyers or table tents.
  • Reprint, and make the new one dynamic. If the print was expensive, make sure it never happens again.

What changing a dynamic code looks like

Open the code in the dashboard, paste the new link, and save. HueQR checks the new link against Google Safe Browsing first, keeps a history of every link the code has pointed to, and the change is live on the next scan. If you decide it was a mistake, the history lets you put the old link back.

Things that change along with the link

Because the short link is the only thing printed, everything behind it is editable too:

  • Rules: send iPhones one place and Android phones another, or change the link by time of day or weekday.
  • Schedules: queue up to 20 future link changes per code.
  • Pause: turn a code off and on. A paused code shows a clean paused page, not an error.
  • Name and placement: keep notes on where each code is printed, so the scan numbers mean something.

Questions

No. Colours, shapes and logo are part of the printed picture. On a dynamic code you can change the destination and the rules behind it, but a new look needs a new print.
