How to

SVG, PNG, PDF or EPS: which QR code file to download

The short answer

Download a PNG for screens, email and quick prints from an office printer. Download an SVG or a PDF for anything that goes to a professional printer or will be scaled up, because they stay sharp at any size. Download an EPS only when a print shop asks for it by name. HueQR gives you PNG with no account, SVG and PDF with a free account, and EPS with Pro.

PNG: pixels

A PNG is a grid of pixels. It looks perfect at the size it was made and gets soft when enlarged. For a website, a slide, an email or a flyer printed on the office printer at close to its natural size, it is the easiest file to handle. Export it large: HueQR offers sizes up to the thousands of pixels, and a bigger PNG survives more enlargement.

SVG: vectors

An SVG describes the squares as shapes, not pixels, so it is identical at 2 cm and at 2 metres. Designers can open it in Figma, Illustrator or Inkscape, change colours and place it exactly. It is the best general-purpose file for print. One caution: some older layout tools handle SVG badly. If the print shop is unsure, send the PDF too.

PDF: vectors in a wrapper every printer accepts

HueQR's PDF contains the same vector shapes as the SVG, inside a format every print workflow understands. If you are emailing a code to a printer and want no questions back, send the PDF.

EPS: for the print shops that still ask

EPS is an older vector format that some packaging and signage shops still require. It carries the same shapes. There is no reason to prefer it unless someone asks, which is why HueQR keeps it in Pro rather than making everyone see a fourth button.

Gradients, logos and transparency across formats

Colour gradients export in every format. Logos are embedded in the file, so a single SVG carries the picture too. A transparent background works in PNG and SVG, and the PDF keeps it as well. If a printer asks for a code on a white box, export with the background on rather than relying on them to add one.

A simple rule

If you are not sure which to send: PDF to a printer, PNG to a screen, SVG to a designer.

Questions

For print, yes: it stays sharp at any size. For a website or email, a PNG is simpler and universally supported.
